Seiko pocketwatches

Having acquired a few pocket watches I also liked for, and came across, ways to wear them on the wrist instead of in my pocket as was customary in the old days.

Seikosha train watch from 40-50's

Then when times became more hectic and required more frequent observing as well as the watch sizes decreased it was more comfortable and practicable to wear the watch on the wrist.

Seiko minister,  a fancy variant with chronometer and ceramic dial. Originally issued for Government officials.

Not everyone was wealthy and able to buy these new small sized time pieces so people designed leather wrist bands for the pocket watches too. These I had seen in pictures looking like a frame going over the watch and then was tied around the wrist with a buckle. I found some old straps but they looked too worn for being worth buying so thought a new one would be better.

I searched and found on Etsy a Ukrainian artisan, Mr. Sanych Grakov, that was selling straps from Moravia in Czech Republic. The leather bracelet fit perfectly my 50mm diameter railway Seiko from my birthyear.

At the same time I came across a Turkish enthusiast, Mr. Umit Yildiz, that has devised a backplate that holds the watch (up to 58mm diameter) and it fits onto a 24mm strap.

I promptly ordered one and fitted it on my railway Seikosha from mid 19th century. I didn't have a 24mm strap at hand so instead I cannibalised an Apple strap from Aliexpress that I had ordered some time ago. The fit was not perfect but works for now.

Those interested can check out Mr. Umit's website

My Seiko pocketwatches, the 50mm diameter vintage ones and a modern smaller quartz on bund straps. Then a series of smaller vintages with another special quartz at the lower right.

Comparing the 2 products i think the one from Sanych offers more protection to the watch in case one would happen to bump against something.

Mr. Umit's backplate design displays the watch more prominently but the watch is also exposed for possible damage. I guess both are good but they have to be chosen for the right environment.

Neither is meant for extreme sports but maybe one is perfect for the office whilst the other is more suited for a more active scene.
