Ringö returned to Vålax as Anny

The local newspaper in city of Borgå published an article about Anny von Hamburg after a cruise to her old trading waters when she was named Ringö, pictures by Kristoffer Åberg and text in Swedish by Jannika Lindén.

Daycruising Anny von Hamburg

"Anny von Hamburg" alongside GH Fyren

Having visited Anny von Hamburg in Ekenäs (Tammisaari) I was invited by Captain Juha Pokka to join (and assist) her for a daycruise in a couple of days time. It is always pleasant to go out to sea, especially in the Finnish archipelago so I was keen as mustard. *)

History of Kalizma

I was doing a post of my experience on Kalizma and included a history section in it but discovered that there is quite a bit of it on the net so I separated it here and added to it, enjoy:

Kalizma, built in 1906, is considered the world's oldest yacht with a rich history. It has survived world wars, plagues, changing ownerships, and various life events, making it a symbol of resilience and endurance. The original name though, Minona, is after the African Goddess of sorcery and  fortunetelling. Still I wonder how much of the original steel remains in her keel though...

Seafaring culture

An old colleague of mine, Lauri Vuorinen, published his musings in Finnish that I have freely translated into English. On the subject, the pictures are all courtesy from another colleague Hannu Vartiainen from 70's-80's.

S/y Eye of the Wind logbook

In the "Logbook" edition 3/2019 of the "Eye of the Wind" publication there is an article about "Anny" and her comparing both schooners on page 4 as they were at the same time in the same port. I have translated the German article, original written by Mr. Ronald Herkert, Managing Director of FORUM train & sail GmbH.

New cruising grounds

Having signed off last April I knew that the stay in Singapore was over and also my counterpart resigned for landbased work, I was now the senior Captain but it didn't look good for the future as both Chief Mate's that I had were not considered mature enough to be promoted and relatively new in the Company.

Moving to Singapore

Having signed on last October as Chief Mate we got the news of a new acquirement by Conning shipping, an old 2nd hand cruise ship made in Denmark. It was all crewed by Ukrainians, cheap as chips as was also told by the Technical Manager, Mr Yeung, that they can't afford us anymore. Bit of a pity to hear it but as usual it is the figure under the red line that matters.

Lita

Having been attending to Bore King and Borea for works we were then sent to m/v Lita, managed by Henry Nielsen LLC, a company originally founded in 1923 by Nielsen who was from Denmark and a Swedish partner Gustaf Thorden. Eventually the partners separated but Nielsen continued with the management and chartering business. He successfully continued to manage ships for different companies but in the end of 70's the market conjunctures went south for bulk and cargoes so in the beginning of the 80's the ships were sold off and flagged out in short order. It was at this time I went to school deciding for a career in an industry that was flailing.

s/s Borea

As I was attending rating school at Åbo Navigationsinstitut 1984-1985 (today Aboa Mare) we were also arranged to go work on an old steamship "Borea" operated by Aura Line in order to get a feel for ships and conditions working onboard + of course to help the crew there with maintenance.
